Search Engine Optimization and Algorithms by Art-Support
Understanding how major search engines determine website ranking is important information that all web developers need to know. Get a glimpse into how search engines work, how they rank web pages, and how to improve your web pages. The top search engines are identified, briefly explained, and you will learn some tips for “search engine optimization”.

Every search engine wants to provide relevant and accurate search results and this is primarily accomplished by using something called an algorithm. An algorithm is a set of mathematical rules which assign values to specific factors like keyword density, page title, meta tags, link popularity, emphasized text and whatever else the search engine determines important. For each search, web page values are totaled and scores are used to rank the web page for search query relevancy.

It takes careful site planning and web development skills to get you website listed in the top ten results of search engine searches. In the near future, I'll be adding information and tips for optimizing your website for the search engines. While this information is being developed can learn more from the following sites:

SearchEngineWatch.com: Portal site with articles on search engine
registration and submission tips, such as using meta tags, improving placement and how to submit URLs. Everything you'll need or want to know about search engines. This is the definitive site for search engine information.

Linkpopularity.com: Enter a website URL and you'll find out who's linking to it. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but it gives you an idea of sites are linking. This is a fun site so checking your websites popularity and it does not cost anything.
 



How to Submit to Search Engines

Art-Support's Submission Page: This is one of the quickest and easiest ways to submit to search engines. From this web page, you'll be able to manually submit your site to several of the top search engines. Once you have submitted submitting your site, it is advisable to submit it again next month. It's also a good idea to re-submit your URL whenever you have completed a major website upgrade.

Search.com: This is a good place to start. The site explains the search engine process and provides manual or multiple search engine listings.

NetMechanic
They are now charging, but worth looking into. Search down the page for Submission Tool Free Sample. Fill in the form below. They will submit your site to 12 search engines. Site includes a comprehensive listing of the current Internet search engines.

Microsoft bCentral
Hosted by Microsoft, it has several areas you might be interested in. Features search engine submission, tips and a variety of web tools for maintaining your website. You should check them out if you are a business site.

AddMe.com
They have a lot of information that you might want to look at.

Meta tags were once a good way to get search engines to find your web site. However as the search engines have gotten more sophisticated we find very few that use meta tags in their search algorithms. With that said, it is very important to know what your websites key words are and use them when developing your site and to be on the safe side I always have meta tags on each of my web pages.
