THE SILVER IMAGE GALLERY

Twenty Years of Photography Exhibitions
August 10, 1973 - May 8, 1993

For twenty years, The Silver Image Gallery presented fine art photography exhibition to the Northwest arts community. When the gallery closed in 1993, it was the oldest photography gallery on the West coast and was the fourth oldest photography gallery in the United States. The gallery started out in Tacoma, Washington and moved four years later to Seattle, where it continued to present photography exhibitions for the next sixteen years. It was a sad day when the gallery closed and the Northwest lost a valuable art and community resource.

The Silver Image Gallery history has been divided it into four sections, with each section representing one of the four gallery locations.

Listed below are some of the people that contributed greatly to the success of the gallery in each location. They represent gallery staff, volunteers, friends and supporters of the gallery. Without their help, The Silver Image Gallery would not have survived for so many years.

Thank you; Paul Horst (co-founder of gallery), Bob Young (partner in year two), Alex Horst, Nicky Horst, Marsha Burns, Michael Burns, Ted D'Arms, Roy Kussman, May Holmes, Mary Pearse, Ron Steinberg and Shedrich Williames. Thank you for your support during the early years of the gallery.

A great photographer and the only person who encouraged me to open a photography gallery. I asked for his advise consulted with him before opening The Silver Image Gallery.
At the time he owned the "Shadow Gallery", near Portland, Oregon, a very fine photography gallery in the early 1970's.

A wonderful photographer and writer that I met in London. He introduced me to the work of Cartier-Bresson and Constantine Manos. He was my main European contact for many years. This exhibition featured images of Morocco where he lived for awhile. We decided to covered the floor with two inches of sand for this exhibition and we also played Moroccan music. This was the first of two exhibitions featuring photographs by Derek Bennett.

(Washington, Traditional, Color & Black and White)
August 5 - August 24, 1974

GEORGE TICE
(New Jersey, Traditional, Black and White, Master)
August 27 - September 15, 1974
I consider this to be the first exhibition by a Master Photographer held at The Silver Image Gallery. The show consisted of a variety of his prints and included his portfolio on The Amish. If you were interested in collecting his prints, for $50 you could have your choice of any print. Several prints were sold during the exhibition helping us gain gallery recognition on the East Coast.

WYNN BULLOCK
(California, Traditional, Black and White, Master)
September 17 - October 27, 1974
Paul Horst and I drove to California to meet Wynn Bullock and pick up the artwork. Wynn and his wife Edna Bullock, taught us the importance of handling artwork carefully and correctly. During the exhibition we sold thirteen prints. Because of the successful sales, Wynn, told other photographers around Carmel that we were a legitimate photography gallery and this really helped in getting the gallery established in California. The prints exhibited were 8" x 10" contact prints that were absolutely beautiful.

A very early showing of Ruth Bernhard's photography. At the time she was not very well known and had not been showing much. The exhibit featured vintage Ruth Bernhard prints which were mounted on Masonite. The Ansel Adams prints were loaned to the gallery by Shedrich Williames and this was the first time Ansel Adams photographs were exhibited
in Tacoma, Washington.

TED D'ARMS
(Washington, Traditional, Black and White)
April 22 - May 11, 1975

MINOR WHITE
(Massachusetts, Traditional, Black and White, Master)
May 13 - June 8, 1975
This was truly a remarkable and historical event for fine art photography. On opening night the exhibition we sold twenty-four photographs. The next morning, I called Minor White and told him about the success. Hewas very pleased with us and said we could order any prints from his book. By the time the show ended, a total of fifty prints were sold. From a historical point of view, selling fifty prints during an exhibition was extremely rare and I'm not sure it had ever happened before. The show consisted of a mixture of vintage and contemporary prints. Since we were located in Tacoma, Washington, Minor let us sell the prints for only $100.00 each. It was a very successful exhibition for everyone.

From time to time, The Silver Image Gallery would have large group exhibitions. This allowed us to introduce new photographers to our audience as well as providing photographers with an opportunity to exhibit in a gallery setting.
